A state-run hospital for the mentally ill and dangerous received a hefty citation for workplace injuries.
The Minnesota Occupation Safety and Health Administration cited the St. Peter-based Minnesota Security Hospital for nine violations totaling $63,000.
Officials at the Minnesota Department of Human Services, which runs the hospital, confirmed the penalty amount Wednesday and said they're working with staff to reduce injuries.
"More work needs to be done to improve safety at the Minnesota Security Hospital," Carol Olson, executive director for forensic services, said in a statement. "We are committed to that work and are currently collaborating with staff, labor partners and others to ensure a safer environment for all employees and patients."
Staff at the hospital have previously voiced concerns over violent patients and the inability to use restraints. The hospital reported 102 injuries resulting from staff assaults this year, compared to 78 last year, according to OSHA.
