Law enforcement agencies from the west metro area rushed to assist Plymouth police when an armed man fled to an apartment building, shortly after another was reported dead nearby.

The alleged gunman was also found dead.

Around 9:14 p.m. Friday, police responded to reports of a person struck by vehicle. When officers arrived at the scene, they found one individual dead and believed shot near Rockford Road and Northwest Boulevard.

About four minutes later, police received a call about a man with a long gun in 5200 block of Annapolis Lane, north of the location where the victim was found.

Police said officers exchanged shots with the suspect, who was later found dead.

Plymouth Police Chief Mike Goldstein said it's unclear if he died because of shots fired by the officers.

The suspect had a criminal history and a "violent past," Goldstein said.

The police chief said he isn't yet sure if the two incidents are connected.

"Someone had to be moving pretty quickly," to get to the second location of the incident, he said.

Multiple officers are "marginally" injured in the shooting at the apartment and were being checked out in a hospital.

"They should be released very, very quickly," Goldstein said.

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office will investigate.
