3M sells Tartan Park golf course; new owner will redesign, make it public

A 500-acre private golf course owned by 3M for the past 40 years has been sold.

HC Golf Course Development purchased Tartan Park with plans to redesign, rename and open it up to the public.

The company is partnering up with ProLinks Sports and golf champions Annika Sorenstam and Arnold Palmer to revamp the 27-hole golf course in Lake Elmo into an 18-hole facility. The plan is to rename the course "The King and The Queen" to honor both legends of the sport.

CEO Hollis Cavner said he plans to invest an additional $20 million to make the golf course and clubhouse better for the environment and family-friendly.

"We want this to be a very, clean green property," he said, adding that the plan includes a new irrigation system and new greens. "It's a makeover, big time."

ProLinks Sports built the TPC Twin Cities golf course in Blaine and manages the PGA Tour there. Cavner said he doesn't plan to move events held elsewhere to the newly renovated Tartan Park.

"We're not building it for that," he said, "this is about being a tremendous public facility, a great asset for Lake Elmo and something great for junior golf."

The golf course is scheduled to open in the summer of 2017. The plan also includes a single-family housing component in the second phase.
