The Minneapolis Downtown Council is offering a $5,000 reward for tips leading to the arrest of a suspect who punched a St. Patrick's Day parade participant.
The assault happened around 8:15 p.m. near the intersection of 5th Street South and Marquette Avenue South, according to police. The suspect is a black male between 15 and 20 years old. He was with a group of other young people, but Minneapolis Police spokesperson John Elder said they didn't interfere.
The unprovoked assault happened despite a heavy police presence, said Downtown Council President and CEO Steve Cramer.
"It's a pretty disturbing situation when the resources that a community counts on to deter that kind of activity were there in place and still didn't have any effect on this individual's behavior," he said. "We need to come to grips with that as a community."
The assault happened after the parade as the victim and his family walked to their car. Cramer said the victim was transferred to the hospital with facial injuries. His family has a long history of participating in the St. Patrick's Day parade.
