Aitkin County Sheriff's deputies shot and killed a 50-year-old woman during a standoff Tuesday night.
Deputies were called to an area northeast of the city of Aitkin at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. A woman there was threatening to shoot herself.
It took the deputies an hour to find the woman and her vehicle in a rural section of Fleming township.
The woman threatened to shoot the the deputies as they approached, a sheriff's department press release said. The officers talked with the woman for nearly two hours, but when she fired at the deputies, they shot back, wounding the woman.
She was airlifted to North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale where she died shortly after 10 p.m. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy.
The shooting is under investigation by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. A spokesman for the bureau said more information will be released once the initial investigation is complete.
