Aitkin County woman killed by sheriff's deputies identified

Authorities have identified the woman shot and killed by sheriff's deputies in Aitkin County last week. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner says Denise Renie Fairchild, 50, of Aitkin died of a gunshot wound to the torso last Tuesday.

Late that afternoon two deputies and a natural resources conservation officer responded to a call about a suicidal woman. The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension says Fairchild showed a gun and threatened to harm herself. For about 90 minutes the officers tried to convince her to drop her weapons.

Authorities say Fairchild fired shots at the officers and they returned fire.

Fairchild died at North Memorial Medical Center.
