Firefighters pull driver from burning car after crash in Mpls.

Minneapolis first responders arrived at a one-car crash scene early Friday morning to find it fully engulfed in flames with the driver still inside.

The man suffered severe burns and was transported to the Hennepin County Medical Center with critical injuries. His identity and condition are not yet known.

Police first tried to get the man out but were unable to without additional tools, police spokesperson John Elder said. Firefighters then extricated the man using Jaws of Life.

"This was an incredibly taxing scene for the first responders on the scene that worked to get this individual out of the car while it was still on fire," he said.

Elder said it's not clear what caused the car to crash while heading westbound on Minnesota Highway 55 in north Minneapolis just after midnight. The car crashed into a center light post at Bryant Avenue.
