Executive: Power grid ready as heat wave looms

Power companies say the looming heat wave is expected to put a strain on the electric grid this week. But there will still be enough supply to keep homes cool.

The firm that manages regional electric generators, Midcontinent Independent System Operator, can typically purchase power from other areas across the country if they're not all seeing the same high temperatures.

"If everybody is going through the same heat wave, that same power may not be available," said company executive Mike McMullen. "So it does impact the amount of energy we might be able to import on some of these peak days."

McMullen advised customers to unplug small appliances and keep shades drawn to ease the strain.

The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning Wednesday through Friday this week. Temperatures are expected to reach the triple digits.
