'Local culture — far-off land' by Peter Wong

Sarah Filipi admires the work of fellow photographer Peter Wong. When he's not photographing golf courses here in Minnesota, he leads photographic tours in Southeast Asia. 

Filipi says his honest portraits of Vietnamese and Malaysian people capture his sincere connection with his subjects. 

" runs Aug. 22 through Sept. 18 at the Atwood Memorial Gallery in St. Cloud, Minn.

Silver Creek International Ukulele Carnival

Ukulele player Emily Youngdahl Wright recommends taking part in the 

, although she admits it's not so much a carnival as a party. 

This year's theme is "Cowboy Songs." People are welcome to play their favorites on stage, or join other groups (you can download sheet music from the organization's website). 

Youngdahl Wright says ukuleles are fun instruments and accessible for all ages. Never played one? No problem! People will be on hand to give you lessons. 

Art critic and historian Sheila Dickinson was delighted by a show called "

The interactive exhibition documents the work artists have done while embedded in various city offices. Dickinson says she was particularly struck by how poets and actors worked with city employees to help remind them of their humanity, and to connect with the humanity of the people they serve.
