A lovely Monday, then rain on its way

Foggy start in some parts

Clear skies have led to a foggy start to the day in west central and northwestern Minnesota. Visibilities were down to a half mile or less in much of that area before sunrise this morning.

High pressure building into the state will treat us to a pleasant October day after the sun begins doing its work. Winds will be light, just some wispy clouds will drift high above and temperatures will be near normal. Afternoon highs should range from the mid 40s in the north to the mid 50s in the south. The Twin Cities should reach about 54, which is the climatological normal high for this date.

Elsewhere

Overnight, numerous thunderstorms dropped rain on California, including normally-dry areas of southern California. Even Death Valley was targeted with thunderstorms.

Meanwhile, another big Pacific storm is spinning up to slam into the Pacific Northwest with heavy rain and strong winds.

Our prospects for rain

Clouds will be on the increase across Minnesota tonight as a low pressure system approaches from the west. Showers will spread eastward across nearly all of the state except the northeast tomorrow. The timing is a bit uncertain, but the Twin Cities area probably will see showers beginning in the afternoon and increasing toward evening. Isolated thunderstorms are possible tomorrow afternoon in southern Minnesota.

Minnesota is not likely to experience severe weather with this system, but there is a marginal risk of severe weather from the Texas panhandle to southwestern Iowa tomorrow. The lighter green represents the chance of general, non-severe thunderstorms.

Rain will continue tomorrow night and end in Minnesota on Wednesday.

Some rain could be substantial

The best chance of receiving an inch or more of rain in our part of the country during that two-day period will be in southernmost Minnesota, much of Iowa and southern Wisconsin.

Later this week

After that weather-maker moves through, Thursday and Friday should be pleasant days with comfortable-for-late-October temperatures.
