Carleton College has suspended 13 students for what campus officials call "hazing and extreme alcohol consumption" as part of an initiation into a secret social club.
 

In a statement, Joe Hargis, associate vice president for external relations for the college, said the incident took place in the early morning on April 28 on and around campus. Hargis also said Northfield police are investigating an allegation of sexual assault following the hazing incident.
 

After an investigation, 13 students were found responsible for serious violations of the college's student code of conduct and were suspended for three trimesters, Hargis stated. The sanctions also include alcohol education and community service.

 
School policies require "all members of the Carleton community to be treated with care, respect and dignity" and strictly forbid hazing, the statement read.
School officials declined to comment further on the incident.

 
Carleton is a private liberal arts college with about 2,000 students in Northfield, about 40 miles south of Minneapolis.
