St. Cloud police are looking for witnesses to a fight that killed a Waconia man, apparently with a single punch.

The incident happened early Saturday morning. Police say two groups of young men encountered each other just before 3 a.m. at 9th Avenue and 7th Street S. in St. Cloud. A verbal confrontation followed, and one member of the group punched 22-year-old Anthony Shriver in the face.

Shriver complained of a headache at the scene of the assault, but declined medical attention and went home with friends.

Police located the suspect in the assault, a 21-year-old St. Cloud man, a short distance away. The man was issued a citation for 5th degree assault at the Stearns County jail.

Around noon Saturday, Shriver was found unresponsive at a home nearby and later pronounced dead there. An autopsy at the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's office found Shriver had died of "trauma consistent with the assault that had occurred in the early morning hours" on Saturday.

The St. Cloud man turned himself in to St. Cloud police and is being held for 2nd degree murder, according to a release from the department. He has not yet been charged in the death.

Police are asking anyone who might have seen the incident or has any information about the matter to call St. Cloud police at 320-251-1200.
