St. Paul country club employee pleads guilty of stealing more than $1 million

The former controller for a St. Paul country club has pleaded guilty to embezzling more than $1 million from the club.

Julie Lee, 53, entered guilty pleas in federal court Monday to one count of wire fraud and one count of filing false tax returns.

The indictment says Lee managed the finances at Town & Country Club in St. Paul. Between 2008 and 2016, she had allegedly taken funds by writing checks from the club to herself, by taking cash and by making payments to her personal credit card with club funds.

She used those funds to buy a 2013 Dodge Charger, a 2015 GMC Sierra truck, a motorcycle, and 81 acres of land in northern Minnesota, among other things.

According to the indictment, she filed false tax returns and late tax payments, which resulted in the country club having to pay more than $300,000 in interest and penalties to the Internal Revenue Service.
