Bicyclist killed after being struck by Blue Line train

A bicyclist was killed after a northbound Blue Line light rail train struck him Tuesday evening in Minneapolis.

Metro Transit spokesperson Howie Padilla said the incident occurred around 6:45 p.m. at 42nd Street and Hiawatha Avenue.

"What we believe to be true at this time is that the gate arms at that intersection were down and the bells were going off indicating that a train was approaching," Padilla said.

Investigators are trying to figure out why the man was on the tracks while the gate arms were down.

The crash shut down light rail service in the area for about 90 minutes.
