Art Hounds: Donyelle Headington conjures creatures from fabric and found objects

Poet and curator Hawona Sullivan Janzen calls artist Donyelle Headington a "fabric whisperer." Headington uses bits of fabric and found objects to create evocative creatures and wise women. Her show at the Goddess of Glass in Minneapolis combines her figures with her poetry, weaving them together in what Janzen says is a compelling, mystical dialogue. On display in the Ryder Gallery through June 3.

Padma Wudali is a student of Indian classical music, and never misses an opportunity to see master veena player Nirmala Rajasekar perform. This Saturday, Rajasekar will be joined by two percussionists at Chinmaya Mission in Chaska in a concert that features some rare ragas (scales) and talas (rhythms). The evening begins with a dinner at 6 p.m., followed by music at 7 p.m.

Classical music enthusiast David Nicholson has been attending Bakken Trio concerts for 15 years, and he's hoping to make it to this weekend's concert as well. The program features four American composers — Virgil Thompson, Charles Ives, Aaron Copeland and TJ Cole — each with a unique take on the American experience, from unsettled to aspirational. The performance gets underway at 4 p.m. Sunday in Antonello Hall at the MacPhail Center for Music in downtown Minneapolis.
