New documentary explores why so few kids can read well

Here's an alarming statistic: More than half of American kids cannot read very well. The problem is largely how reading is taught.

Educators have been divided for generations over what's the best way to teach reading. Now, we have definitive scientific evidence from neuroscience on how the brain learns to read, but that research points to a different approach to reading instruction than is commonly found in schools.

APM Reports Correspondent Emily Hanford has been looking into this and produced a new documentary that's out called "Hard Words."
