An embryonic take on what would become Prince's anthem "Purple Rain" is one of the things you'll hear on "Piano and a Microphone 1983"
The newly released album features 35 minutes of music recorded on a cassette tape in Prince's home studio. The cassette was found in his infamous vault after Prince's death.
Lisa Coleman, who was in Prince's band when this recording was made, contributed to the liner notes for the album. She told Billboard: "Listening to this tape is kind of like watching a soccer player warm up with a soccer ball — they kick it around and bounce it off different parts of their body. They're focusing."
