The hack lasted about half an hour and was apparently part of a bitcoin scam that has been spreading in recent months. 

 of a tweet apparently posted on the retailer's account. The tweet said Target was giving away bitcoin and would accept the electronic currency for payments. The hackers' English was blatantly ungrammatical, proclaiming, "We giving 5,000 Bitcoin to all community." 

And, "We organize the biggest crypto-giveaway in the world!"

"We're in close contact with Twitter," said Target spokesperson Danielle Schumann.  The company has regained control of the account and the tweet has been deleted.

Target's Twitter account has about 2 million followers.
