'Love Child' topped the Billboard pop chart 50 years ago — and it has a sequel song

"Love Child" by Diana Ross & the Supremes topped the Billboard pop chart 50 years ago today.

Ross is the only member of the Supremes to sing on the recording; the backing vocals were provided by session singers. The song is about a woman who is concerned that if she sleeps with her boyfriend, they will have a love child.

After the success of this single, the Supremes put out a sequel song. Released in 1969, the sequel is told from the point of view of the grown-up child, who is ashamed of her mother. It's called "I'm Livin' in Shame."
