St. Paul police say a third pedestrian has been struck and killed in the city this year, nearly matching the toll for all of last year.
The most recent crash happened at Kellogg and John Ireland boulevards, a block from the Cathedral of St. Paul. Police say a car struck a man walking through the intersection at about 6 a.m. Thursday and he died at the scene.
"Our officers, when they arrived, found the striking vehicle was still on scene, the driver of that vehicle was out attempting to assist the victim in this case with first aid, as well as a witness who was also in the area and happened to be in the medical field," said police spokesperson Mike Ernster.
Family members identified the man as Dan Lytle, 54, of North St. Paul, who may have been visiting a girlfriend nearby.
Ernster said the department stepped up pedestrian safety last year and is boosting its efforts again.
