One dead after 'officer-involved shooting incident' near Duluth

State authorities are investigating an "officer-involved shooting incident" that left one person dead Saturday afternoon near Duluth.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension reported in a news release that the incident — in which shots were fired and a person being pursued by deputies was struck by a squad car — happened shortly after 3 p.m. in Hermantown.

The person being pursued died at the scene. Authorities have not released information about who that person is or how they died; the BCA also did not say who fired the shots, but did say a gun was recovered at the scene.

The St. Louis County sheriff's deputies involved in the incident were not wearing body cameras. The BCA said it is working to determine whether squad cameras captured footage of the incident.

According to the BCA:

Two Hermantown police officers and a St. Louis County deputy attempted to stop a motorcyclist traveling north on Midway Road at speeds of more than 100 mph. The officers called off the pursuit near the intersection of Miller Trunk Highway and Ugstad Road in Hermantown, northwest of Duluth.

A short time later, deputies spotted the motorcyclist near the corner of Stebner Road and Village Drive.

"They pursued the subject briefly until the motorcycle became stuck and the motorcyclist attempted to flee on foot. At one point during the encounter shots were fired. At another point the subject was struck by a squad car," the BCA reported in a news release.

"St. Louis County and Hermantown law enforcement personnel rendered medical aid but the subject was pronounced deceased at the scene."

The BCA said the name of the person who died, and the names of the deputies involved, will be released once family members have been notified and after initial interviews are complete.
