A steamy Friday, with shower and thunderstorm chances for some areas

Nicest day of the weekend will be Saturday

Get ready for some steamy weather Friday afternoon.

It won’t be that Guam-like steaminess that we saw last Friday, but it’ll be steamy as dew points and temperatures ramp up over the southern half of Minnesota and parts of western Wisconsin.

Temperature trends

Minnesota and western Wisconsin highs will be mainly in the 80s Friday afternoon, with some 70s near the North Shore of Lake Superior. A few spots in southwestern and west-central Minnesota could creep into the lower 90s.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see a 90-degree reading somewhere in the Twin Cities metro area.

Saturday highs will be well into the 80s in the southern half of Minnesota and parts of western Wisconsin:

Sunday high temps will be mainly in the lower 80s:

Twin Cities metro area highs are projected to be around 80 Monday and Tuesday, followed by lower 80s Wednesday and Thursday

Rain and thunder chances

Scattered showers and thunderstorms could linger into late morning from the southern part of the Twin Cities metro area into western Wisconsin.

Forecast models show that the best chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms Friday afternoon will be across roughly the northern third of Minnesota, eventually expanding into northern Wisconsin.

Those thunderstorms to the north will continue into Friday evening. We could see scattered showers and thunderstorms late Friday afternoon and Friday evening in central Minnesota, the Twin Cities metro area and southern Minnesota plus western Wisconsin.

A few strong-to-severe thunderstorms will be possible.

The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center shows a slight risk of severe weather Friday and Friday night in northeastern Minnesota and far northern Wisconsin.

From southwestern Minnesota through the metro area and into western Wisconsin, there is a marginal risk of severe weather:

A slight risk means that scattered severe thunderstorms are possible, while marginal risk indicates that an isolated severe thunderstorm is possible:

The Storm Prediction Center updates the severe weather outlook several times each day.

As always, updated weather information can be heard on the Minnesota Public Radio Network, and you’ll also see updated weather info on the MPR News live weather blog.

Drought update

Most of Minnesota has seen generous rains this spring and summer. The latest update from U.S. Drought Monitor shows that Minnesota remains free of drought, but a portion of northeastern Minnesota is abnormally dry:
