Two people are recovering after they were hit by an SUV while sitting at a coffee shop patio Monday night in Eagan.
The crash happened about 9 p.m. at a Starbucks just off of Interstate 35E, near Yankee Doodle Road.
Police say a 44-year-old Eagan man had driven his SUV through a commercial area and up onto the coffee shop patio, then crashed into the glass front of the shop.
“The driver was believed to be under the influence and he was later arrested for DWI,” said Eagan police spokesperson Aaron Machtemes. “He was treated at a local hospital, and then transported to Dakota County jail, where he awaits official charging.”
The crash injured a 29-year-old man from West St. Paul and a 30-year-old woman from Eagan. They were taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul with what Machtemes called serious injuries. He said that both were apparently seated on the outdoor patio when they were hit.
Police say even though the SUV hit the coffee shop and went partly inside, the building didn’t suffer any structural damage. The Starbucks did have to close and expects to reopen Wednesday after repairs.
