Rain and some thunderstorms Monday; cool, breezy Tuesday
Sunday’s generally light rain was a prelude to a soggier Monday. Areas of rain and even some thunderstorms will continue to brew along and ahead of an advancing cold front.
The main area of rain so far this Monday morning has developed from South Dakota across southwestern and west-central parts of Minnesota. The rain is headed northeastward toward the central part of the state during the morning.
There have been some embedded thunderstorms within the rain area but they have weakened as they spread from South Dakota into a more stable atmosphere across Minnesota.
Areas of rain are likely to reach the Twin Cities area by late Monday morning or early afternoon.

Afternoon heating is likely to generate thunderstorms. The eastern half of the Twin Cities metro area has been placed in a marginal risk area for severe weather later on Monday.
Afternoon temperatures will be on the cool side for August. Look for highs mainly from the 60s to the low 70s. The Twin Cities should reach around 72.
Cool, breezy Tuesday
The cold front will cross Minnesota on Monday and be well off to our east by Tuesday. The cyclonic flow on the backside should spin up scattered showers on Tuesday.
Also look for cooler temperatures on Tuesday. Highs will be from the mid-60s to around 70 with falling temperatures later in the day as a gusty west wind blows in autumnal air.
Lovely rest of the week
Delightful weather will be coming our way from Wednesday well into the weekend. It should be a dry period for the state except for maybe a few showers near Canada on Thursday.
Long range forecasts are questionable as to whether or not the dry weather will last all the way through Sunday.
Tropical action
The Atlantic hurricane season is beginning to rev up. Tropical Storm Dorian has formed and is headed for the Lesser Antilles including Barbados. Dorian has a good chance to become a marginal hurricane as it approaches Puerto Rico and then the Dominican Republic in a few days.
