Five officers in fatal Richfield shooting identified

The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office has released the names of five Edina and Richfield police officers involved in the fatal shooting of Brian Quinones on Sept. 7.
Officers Joseph Carroll, Dylan Schultz and Macabe Stariha of the Richfield Police Department, and Nicholas Pedersen and Benjamin Wenande of the Edina Police Department were named Monday. All five have been police officers for less than five years, ranging between two and four years of experience.
Police say Quinones, 30, ran a red light, and he then streamed the pursuit on Facebook Live as police pursued him through Edina and into Richfield. Officers fired 12 shots at Quinones in less than 20 seconds after he exited his vehicle. Statements by the officers, who were all placed on paid administrative leave by their respective departments, said they fired their weapons after Quinones confronted them with a knife.
Quinones’ family members said he may have been experiencing “suicidal thoughts,” and his brother said he received a “So sorry” text from him days before he was killed. Family members and supporters questioned the police’s use of lethal force, and held a vigil that shut down Interstate 494 for a short time Sept. 8.
The Hennepin County Sheriff’s office will not release dash cam video from the incident, fearing that such a move release would jeopardize the investigation, Sheriff Dave Hutchinson said in a statement. The incident is currently under investigation by the Sheriff’s office, who will then submit its findings to the Hennepin County Attorney’s office for review.
