More cold air moved into the state Tuesday. By Wednesday afternoon our temperatures return to average or above for all of Minnesota. Light snow will move in on Thursday.
Tuesday’s Forecast
The Tuesday morning temperatures were a perfect example of how clouds influence our weather.
Minnesota saw mostly negative temperatures where skies cleared overnight, but in southeastern Minnesota where clouds remained, most of the morning lows were much milder and in the teens.
Those clouds in southern Minnesota break up some through the day, becoming partly cloudy, and the rest of the state with see mostly sunny skies for Tuesday.
Despite the sunshine, high temperatures will remain about 5-10 degrees below average.

Temperature trend
With even southern Minnesota seeing clearer skies Tuesday night, all the state will start off cold on Wednesday.

Between the temperatures Tuesday through Wednesday morning, most of the state is seeing its coldest weather in two weeks. This is not because the cold is extreme for this time of year, but because we have just been that mild recently.
By Wednesday afternoon, all of Minnesota returns to highs in the 20s. The weather through the weekend remains seasonable for early February.

Snow chances
High pressure sitting over Minnesota will lead to sunny skies again Wednesday. Clouds increase Thursday as a weak area of low pressure heads toward the state. This will also spread light snow across the state Thursday into early Friday.

It currently looks like most of the state would see well under 1 inch of snow, with slightly higher amounts possible near Lake Superior.

After a quieter Saturday, another system may clip Minnesota Sunday into Monday.

Right now, it looks like the best chance for a couple inches of accumulation may fall in southern Minnesota. We’ll keep you updated as the weekend approaches.
