Tuesday is off to a bitterly cold start for most of the state, but the day will bring plenty of sunshine across Minnesota.
Tuesday’s forecast
The Tuesday morning temperatures are a perfect example of the role clouds can play in overnight temperatures. The skies cleared for most of Minnesota, except for the southeast corner of the state. Here is the satellite as of 6:30 a.m. showing where the clouds are (a few clouds have also returned for northern Minnesota, but this area spent most of the night under clearer skies).

All of northern is seeing subzero temperatures Tuesday morning, and most other parts of the state are in the single digits. However, where the clouds lingered overnight and provided insulation, most of the temperatures remained in the teens. Here are those temperatures as of 7 a.m.

Those clouds in southern Minnesota break up some through the day, becoming partly cloudy, and the rest of the state will see mostly sunny skies for Tuesday.

Despite the sunshine, high temperatures will remain about 5 to 10 degrees below average.

For much of the state, between the morning lows and the afternoon highs, it will be the coldest air in the past two weeks, thanks to the recent mild trend.
The parts of Minnesota that dodged the colder air Tuesday morning won’t escape it Wednesday morning. That extended forecast will be updated around 9 a.m.
