Blizzard warnings in Northwest Minnesota, winter weather advisories across the state

Colder air and light snow are impacting Minnesota Friday, but a much more potent storm moves in Saturday night.

A cold front that passed through Thursday means colder air across much of Minnesota Friday, especially for northwestern Minnesota, which started Friday with wind chills 30 below and colder. 

The colder air means a lot of the state will not warm much on Friday, and a few locations, such as Duluth, could see temperatures fall slightly into the afternoon. Here are the expected temperatures by 4 p.m.: 

Light snow has also been making its way across the state, with most places seeing an inch of snow or less. The area around Duluth has seen the most widespread light snow as of Friday morning, and could see snow into the afternoon.

For the rest of the state, snow winds-down through the morning, with flurries still possible for eastern Minnesota Friday afternoon. Northern and western Minnesota will see clearing skies, but the majority of the state remains mostly cloudy all day. 

Saturday starts off cold, with most of the state below zero. 

Otherwise, the day stays relatively quiet, and there will even be some sunshine. By Saturday evening, snow starts pushing in from the southwest then spreads across southern Minnesota by early Sunday. 

With the storm poised to track along the Iowa border, the heaviest snow will likely fall near or just north of Interstate 90, where some places could get 6 to 8 inches or more. 

The snow totals diminish quickly on the north side of the storm, and already by central Minnesota, little snow is expected. 

For the Twin Cities, there could be a large contrast in snow totals between the south and north Metro. It currently looks like 2 to 4 inches in the north metro and up to 5 or 6 inches on the south side, but these totals could vary with even a slight change in the storm track. 

Regardless of exact snow totals, plan for slow and even treacherous travel on Sunday. A winter storm watch had already been issued from Saturday night through Sunday.

The system moves out quickly by Sunday afternoon but it will stay windy across southwest Minnesota, so even as the snow departs there still could be areas of blowing snow.

Saturday highs will be in the teens and 20s across Minnesota, and the entire state is likely to be back in the 20s by Monday. Here are the expected high temperatures for the Twin Cities through Tuesday.
