Another brutally cold morning, but a warming trend begins by afternoon

Statewide sunshine Thursday

After another dangerously cold start Thursday morning, temperatures will rise into the teens and 20s by the afternoon under southwesterly winds and sunshine.

Thursday’s forecast

Minnesota is starting off very cold again Thursday morning, with the entire state below zero, and parts of northern Minnesota 20 or 30 below, especially areas that saw calm winds overnight. Many places where winds were not calm feel just as cold because of the wind chill. Due to wind chills colder than minus 20 for much of the state, a wind chill advisory is up for most of Minnesota until 9 a.m.

Temperatures will rise significantly through the day, climbing 20 to 30 degrees or more by afternoon, giving the majority of the state highs in the teens.

While that is still below average, it is a 20- to 30-degree warmup from the morning. The warmup comes thanks to sunny skies and winds that will pick up from the southwest by afternoon, drawing in milder air.

The warmer wind flow will cause temperatures across much of Minnesota to keep rising overnight, leading to highs in the 30s by Friday. That extended forecast will be updated around 9 a.m.
