Mild Sunday temps; far northern Minn. may see some flakes

March temperature outlook isn't too extreme

The Saturday high temp at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport was 42 degrees. That’s 11 degrees warmer than our average Feb. 22 high in the Twin Cities. It might have felt a bit March-like; 42 is our average Twin Cities high on March 17. Many areas will see mild temps again on Sunday.

Temperature trends

Sunday highs are expected to range from lower 30s in northwestern Minnesota to lower 40s in southeastern Minnesota:

Twin Cities metro area highs are projected to be in the upper 30s on Monday and in the mid 30s on Tuesday. Then we cool down; metro area highs might only reach the mid 20s on Wednesday, followed by lower 20s Thursday and upper 20s on Friday.

How about March? The March temperature outlook from the Climate Prediction Center of the National Weather Service shows equal chances of near normal, above normal and below normal temps across Minnesota and Wisconsin for the month of March:

We’ll see how March pans out. Our average Twin Cities high temp rises from 34 degrees on March 1 to 49 degrees on March 31.

Any Sunday rain or snow chance?

I should mention that areas of fog are possible in Minnesota and western Wisconsin late Saturday night and early Sunday morning.

It still looks like far northern Minnesota may see a few flurries or light snow showers on Sunday. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s North American Mesoscale forecast model shows the potential precipitation pattern Sunday and Sunday evening:

One year ago

The snow total so far this month at MSP airport is 7.5 inches. It was much snowier last February and our snow shoveling muscles were very tired at this time last year. From Feb.1 through Feb. 22 of 2019, 31.7 inches of snow were tallied at MSP airport. We went on to set a new Twin Cities February snowfall record, with a grand total of 39 inches.
