Sun-splashed Sunday, mild temps but breezy

Cooler by mid-week

We’ll have March-like highs in many areas today, but it’ll be breezy. It probably won’t feel as warm as it did on Saturday.

Temperature trends

Sunday highs will be mainly in the 30s in northern Minnesota, but a few spots in northeastern Minnesota could touch 40. Highs in the 40s are forecast for much of southern Minnesota, the Twin Cities metro area and western Wisconsin.

Most of Minnesota and western Wisconsin will see highs in the 30s on Monday:

Rain or snow chances

Parts of far northern Minnesota could see a flurry, light snow shower or sprinkle this Sunday afternoon or evening. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s North American Mesoscale forecast model shows the potential precipitation pattern Sunday afternoon and Sunday evening:

Snow depths

If you have outdoor plans today, you’ll be happy to know that there’s plenty of snow on the ground across most of Minnesota. Here’s the latest snow depth map, courtesy of the Minnesota State Climatology Office and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources:

The snow cover has undoubtedly decreased a bit due the Saturday’s mild temps, but as of Thursday much of northern Minnesota had 18 inches or more of snow cover, and parts of northeastern Minnesota had more than 30 inches of snow on the ground. Portions of south-central and southeastern Minnesota had over 12 inches of snow cover. The official Twin Cities snow depth was 7 inches this Sunday morning.

I’ll bet that many cross-country skiers, sledders, snowboarders and snowmobilers will be having fun outdoors today!

Much snowier last February

Last year, Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport tallied 31.7 inches of snow during the first three weeks of February. This February has been much more typical, with 7.5 inches of snow so far at MSP airport.
