Another brief cool-down is on the way for Minnesota

Warm air returns by the weekend

A storm that will slide south of Minnesota is bringing minimal chances for snow, but it is going to impact the state with the return of colder temperatures.

Changing weather Tuesday

A weather system that will skirt west then south of Minnesota will bring a chance for dusting of snow to the very southern edge of Minnesota on Tuesday, with maybe a few isolated flurries elsewhere.

The area just south of Duluth could also get a few flurries or a dusting overnight into early Tuesday, because of a wintry mix coming off Lake Superior due to the wind flow, but that precipitation is most likely to set-up in northern Wisconsin. What will be more noticeable than the snow is the colder, northerly winds, which will be gusting over 20 mph for much of Minnesota by Tuesday afternoon.

That colder air will drop temperatures back closer to average by Tuesday afternoon.

Temperature trend

Tuesday is just the start of the cooler air. Temperatures cool more by Wednesday and Thursday, at which point high temperatures will run below average, in the teens and 20s. Thursday and Friday morning could bring morning temperatures below zero for northern Minnesota. Temperatures return to average by the weekend. Here is that temperature trend for the Twin Cities:

Once temperatures recover, the first week of March is likely to stay above average.

Precipitation chances

After Tuesday’s light snow chance, there are no significant chances for precipitation until early next week. In fact, most of the state will see a fair amount of sunshine Thursday through Sunday. Even the precipitation chance early next week doesn’t currently look significant, and it could be a mix of rain or snow given the temperatures. With the lack of new snow and the mild temperatures, we will continue to see our snow pack erode significantly in the week ahead.
