Weekend forecast: 40s in some areas, breezy by Sunday afternoon

Deepest snow cover to the north

There won’t be any dramatic winter weather this weekend. Far northern Minnesota may see a few flurries Sunday afternoon or a light snow shower.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s North American Mesoscale forecast model shows the potential precipitation pattern Sunday afternoon:

Weekend temps and wind chills

Our average Twin Cities high temperature is 34 degrees on Feb. 29. We’ll do better than that this Saturday, with highs in the lower 40s. Southern Minnesota and parts of western Wisconsin will reach the lower 40s, with mainly upper 30s elsewhere:

I think some spots in northern Minnesota will touch 40.

Snow depths

If you have outdoor plans this weekend, you’ll be happy to know that there’s still plenty of snow on the ground across most of Minnesota. Here’s the latest snow depth map, courtesy of the Minnesota State Climatology Office and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources:

Most areas have seen their snow cover shrink a bit in the past week, but much of northern Minnesota still has 18 inches or more of snow cover, and parts of northeastern Minnesota have more than 30 inches of snow on the ground. Portions of southern Minnesota have 8 to 12 inches of snow cover, while other parts of southern Minnesota have 4 to 8 inches. The official Twin Cities snow depth was 4 inches this Friday morning.

Cross-country skiers, sledders, snowboarders and snowmobilers across much of Minnesota still have adequate snow cover for outdoor fun.

If you’re looking for weekend activity options, Explore Minnesota has a list of many events and festivals around the state. One event this Saturday is Let’s Hygge in Roseville, which is described as:

Hygge is a defining characteristic of Danish culture and refers to a quality of coziness that brings about a feeling of contentment. We will be spending a cozy afternoon at Cedarholm Community Building celebrating winter and all things hygge. Activities may include: snowshoeing, kick sledding, smores, hot chocolate bar and an art make and take table.

The temperature is expected to be around 30 degrees at 10 a.m. Saturday in Roseville, rising to around 40 at 1 p.m., with 5-10 mph winds and a cloud/sun mix.

I hope you have a great weekend!
