Wind and rain Saturday afternoon, changeover to snow in many areas Saturday night

Snow back to a mix Sunday morning, then back to rain

Get ready for some soaking rains Saturday afternoon and early Saturday evening. We may even see some lightning and hear a rumble of thunder by late Saturday afternoon.

Rain will begin to mix with snow this evening from southwestern Minnesota through central Minnesota and on into northeastern Minnesota. The transition to a rain/snow mix might hold off until late evening in most of the Twin Cities metro area and west-central Wisconsin. The rain/snow mix changes to all snow in most areas overnight, then continues as snow or a mix early Sunday morning, followed by a transition back to rain showers.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s North American Mesoscale forecast model shows the potential precipitation pattern Saturday afternoon through Sunday afternoon:

Precipitation totals (rain plus the water content of snow) will be over one inch in many areas this weekend:

Notice the stripe of 4+ inches from Wright county northeastward. I see the possibility of 2 to 3 inches in western Carver county and from northwestern Hennepin county into northern Anoka county by Sunday morning, but some of that snow will melt once the snow lets up. Lighter snow amounts of one inch or less are expected in the southeastern part of the metro area.

Snow totals of three to six inches are expected in parts of northeastern Minnesota:

Details of the advisory:

URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE National Weather Service Twin Cities/Chanhassen MN 319 AM CDT Sat Mar 28 2020 ...Rain Changing to Snow Tonight... .A strong storm system will move northeast through the region today through Sunday. Rain will overspread the area today, but temperatures will start to fall tonight as the storm system moves into northeast Iowa. The colder temperatures will help change rain to snow across portions of Minnesota, mainly near and west of I-35 during the evening hours. The changeover to snow will likely occur during heavier periods of precipitation, so snowfall rates will exceed a half inch per hour at times. Accumulations in the advisory area, which extends from near Redwood Falls and New Ulm northeast through Hutchinson, Princeton, and Mora, will range from 1 to locally 5 inches. At this time, it appears that the primary impacts will be primarily west and north of the Twin Cities metro area. In addition to the snowfall, northeast winds of 15 to 25 mph with higher gusts will become northwest by Sunday morning.
