A severe weather risk Tuesday, then drier weather returns

Cooler temperatures by late week

More showers and storms are moving across Minnesota Tuesday, including a severe weather risk for the southeastern corner of the state.  The rest of the week brings quieter weather, including more sunshine.

Tuesday’s forecast

Tuesday started off very mild, and it will stay mostly cloudy, humid and warm through the day, with highs in the 70s for most of the state, and a few 80s southeast.

The Twin Cities still has not reached 80 yet this year and has another chance to hit that milestone Tuesday.

The entire state is likely to see showers and storms again, and there has already been a widespread area of rain moving across northern Minnesota as of Tuesday morning.

That rain continues east, bringing very needed rain across the northern tier of the state.  Much of northern Minnesota could get around a quarter inch of rain.

Showers and storms that develop later across southern, and especially southeastern Minnesota will likely bring even higher rain totals, with some amounts over an inch possible. Those storms in southeastern Minnesota could also become severe, particularly in the afternoon and evening hours, including the risk for a couple tornadoes to develop.  The risk area does include the Twin Cities.

Extended forecast

Already by Tuesday evening, skies will start to clear across northeastern Minnesota, and the clouds and rain chances diminish across the state overnight.  By Wednesday morning, most of the state sees more widespread sunshine and only southeastern Minnesota could see a couple lingering rain showers or isolated storms.

Thursday, a cold front passes through that should be predominantly dry, but may bring a few more clouds and a couple light showers.  After that, skies remains mostly sunny through the end of the week.

In terms of temperatures, the additional sunshine on Wednesday means even warmer weather, with much of the state making it into the 80s. Thursday’s cold front brings most of the state back into the 70s Thursday, then as the cooler air continues to filter in, a few more highs in the 60s are possible by Friday and Saturday.

Highs in the 60s are slightly cooler than average, but it still should be fairly comfortable with lower humidity and plenty of sunshine!
