Severe storms are likely Tuesday

Hot weather continues into next week

Tuesday brings dangerous heat and chances for severe weather to southern Minnesota. The week ahead continues to have above-average temperatures with occasional showers and storms.

Tuesday’s forecast

After widespread 90s Monday across much of western Minnesota, even up to the Canadian border, a cold front that has moved through most of Minnesota brings slightly cooler weather to northern Minnesota Tuesday.

The northern half of the state sees more highs in the 80s, which is still above average, while southern Minnesota will stay hot and in the 90s.

The southern part of the state also has higher humidity, which will cause afternoon heat indices in southeastern Minnesota to approach 100 degrees.

The heat and humidity, along with the front stalling in southern Minnesota, serves as a trigger for storms in the southern half of the state Tuesday afternoon. Some of those storms are likely to be severe, putting much of southern Minnesota under a risk for severe weather Tuesday afternoon and evening.

The primary risk is for wind and hail, although there could be isolated tornadoes, particularly in southeastern Minnesota, which is under an enhanced risk area. In general, rain remains under one-quarter inch, but there will be localized higher amount under strong storms.

Extended forecast

The lingering front finally clears through Minnesota by early Wednesday, bringing dry skies, lower humidity, and more sunshine. Temperatures will not be as hot, staying in the 70s and 80s through the end of the week.

This is still about 5 to 15 degrees above average.

Next week is also looking hot, with more 90s possible. After a quiet Wednesday, more showers and storms are likely by Thursday, and possibly again around Sunday.

It looks like the humidity will also be higher again by the start of next week, so be careful if you need to be outside for extended periods of time in the heat and humidity.
