More storms expected over the weekend

Friday stays sunny and seasonable

After a quiet and sunny Friday, the weather turns active again over the weekend and into early next week, including a severe weather risk for northwestern Minnesota.  Meanwhile, temperatures rise into the 90s by Monday.

Friday’s forecast

Friday’s weather is drier and slightly cooler behind the cold front that passed through Minnesota Thursday.  Showers and storms from the overnight and early Friday morning have moved out, and now sunshine prevails the rest of the day.

Highs will range from the upper 60s in northern Minnesota to the lower 80s south, which is near average for most of the state.

Humidity is lower, especially for southern Minnesota, and the afternoon will be somewhat breezy.

Weekend storm

Much like Friday, Saturday will also be mostly sunny and seasonable, with most of the highs in the 70s. By late Saturday afternoon, a storm system could start bringing a few showers and storms to western Minnesota.  The highest chance for precipitation comes overnight Saturday into Sunday morning, although especially for northern Minnesota, some wet weather could linger through Sunday.

Severe weather is likely for the northwestern corner of the state, especially on Sunday. In fact, the edge of Minnesota near the Red River Valley has already been put in an “enhanced” severe risk category for Sunday (shown in orange), with the rest of northwestern Minnesota under a “slight” risk (shown in yellow).

Extended forecast

The weather remains active with another weather system impacting Minnesota Monday into Tuesday and more statewide showers and storms. That system funnels hot weather back into the state, so by Monday afternoon, much of the state will see highs in the 90s again.

Behind that storm, cooler air does return, likely returning the state to more typical June temperatures by midweek.  Highs the second half of the week will be in the 70s and 80s, with even a few 60s possible.
