Weekend forecast: Scattered storms Saturday, a quiet Sunday

Severe thunderstorm watch until 7 pm for 4 counties in far SE Minnesota

We’ll get to the weekend forecast shortly, but I first want to mention the potential for severe weather in far southern Minnesota and southwestern Wisconsin Thursday afternoon and evening.

The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center has issued a severe thunderstorm watch that continues until 7 p.m. for Freeborn, Mower, Fillmore and Houston counties in southern Minnesota, plus much of Iowa and parts of southwestern Wisconsin:

Some areas in far southern Minnesota could also see heavy rain and localized flooding.

A few strong thunderstorms are possible in a few southeastern Minnesota counties that aren’t included in the severe thunderstorm watch, plus portions of Wisconsin that aren’t included in the watch.

The weekend

Our best chance of rain this weekend will be on Saturday. Minnesota and western Wisconsin will have some occasional showers and thunderstorms Saturday and Saturday evening.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s North American Mesoscale (NAM) forecast model shows the potential rain pattern Saturday and Saturday evening:

Our average Twin Cities high temp is 84 degrees on July 11. Our Saturday high in the Twin Cities is expected to be right around 84 degrees. Highs this time of year often occur between about 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., so let’s take a look at 4 p.m. temperatures on Saturday:
