July's heat finally takes a break

More showers and storms Saturday

After a quiet day Friday, more showers and storms move in for the first half of the weekend.  Temperatures return closer to average after a hotter than normal July so far.

Friday’s forecast

Minnesota started off in the 50s and 60s Friday morning, and under mostly sunny skies, we’ll see a few highs in the 70s in northern Minnesota and 80s for the rest of the state.

Most of these temperatures are still slightly above average, but not as warm as some of our recent weather. Behind the system that caused storms the past two days, lower humidity has moved in and almost all but southern Minnesota will see comfortable dew points in the 50s Friday.

The next storm

The drier weather doesn’t last long. By Friday evening, a new storm system brings storms into the western edge of the state, and showers and storms spread across Minnesota Saturday.

Although the entire state has a chance for wet weather, the brunt of the storm stays west and south of Minnesota. This limits chances for severe weather and means precipitation is likely to be heaviest in southwestern Minnesota and least likely in the northeastern corner of the state.

Skies clear again by Sunday, with more widespread rain chances again late Monday into Tuesday.

Temperatures return closer to average

July has been a very hot month across Minnesota.

Through July 9, the Twin Cities has been almost 7 degrees above average for the month, and Duluth has been almost 10 degrees above average. The overnight lows in particular have run much warmer than average.

The week ahead will finally bring closer to average temperatures, with overnight lows in the 50s and 60s and daytime highs mostly in the 70s and 80s. The Twin Cities average high and low right now are 84 and 64, and the weekend forecast shows that return to seasonable July weather.
