A steamy weekend; scattered thunderstorm chances

Severe weather chances highest to the west on Saturday

After several cool days this past week, some people were beginning to wonder if summer was over. Summery weather has returned for the weekend.

Saturday highs will be in the 80s across most of Minnesota and western Wisconsin. We could top out in the upper 80s Saturday afternoon in the Twin Cities metro area. Dew point temperatures will be in the steamy 70s across most of Minnesota and western Wisconsin Saturday afternoon.

On Sunday, most areas will have highs in the 80s, with a few 70s in northeastern Minnesota:

A few spots in southwestern Minnesota could creep into the lower 90s Sunday afternoon.

Sunday dew points will be mainly in the 70s, with some 60s in northwestern Minnesota.

Thunderstorm chances

Far northern Minnesota will have some areas of scattered showers and thunderstorms Saturday morning, with a few very isolated showers in the southeast.

A batch of thunderstorms may move into parts of western Minnesota Saturday afternoon, then spread eastward by late afternoon and evening. Areas of thunderstorms are possible anywhere in Minnesota and western Wisconsin overnight Saturday night.

The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center shows a slight risk of severe weather (shaded yellow) Saturday and Saturday night in southwestern and west-central Minnesota, with a marginal risk of severe weather (dark green) across most of the remainder of Minnesota plus Wisconsin:

Scattered thunderstorms are possible anytime on Sunday and Sunday night.

Temperature trends

Twin Cities metro area highs are projected to reach 80 on Monday, followed by lower 80s  Tuesday and mid 80s Wednesday through Friday.

Temperatures may be a bit above normal next weekend. The NWS Climate Prediction Center shows a tendency for above-normal temps in Minnesota and western Wisconsin from August 13 through August 17:
