Clearing skies, cooler temperatures for most of Minnesota

Storms linger south Monday, then widespread chances return Wednesday

After widespread severe weather Sunday and early Monday, most of the state sees sunshine Monday and Tuesday before the weather turns more active again by Wednesday.

A cold front moving across the state brought numerous high wind and large hail reports Sunday into early Monday, including a possible tornado touchdown in the Thief River Falls area in northwestern Minnesota.

As it moved through the Twin Cities overnight, winds over 60 mph downed trees, and large hail reports included baseball-size hail north of Lake Minnetonka. Here is the radar estimate of where some of the largest hail fell:

There were also areas of very heavy rain, particularly in the southwestern corner of the Twin Cities metro area. These are some of the highest reports as of 9 a.m.:

Monday’s forecast

The front is finally clearing through the southeastern corner of the state, taking much of the severe weather risk along with it.

Another disturbance is clipping southern Minnesota with showers and isolated severe storms, but most of that area, especially most of the risk for stronger storms, will stay south of the Iowa border.

Behind the front, skies are clearing, and almost all of the state sees sunshine, although southern Minnesota keeps a few more clouds through the morning along with the lingering rain chances.

Cooler, drier air is also filtering across the state. In fact, parts of north Minnesota even saw a few 40s Monday morning. Highs will be in the 70s and low 80s, and the humidity stays noticeably lower.

Extended forecast

Tuesday remains dry and sunny, but slightly warmer, with most of the state making it into the 80s.

By Wednesday, the humidity is on the rise again, and the weather becomes more unsettled.
