Wintry mix spreads across Minnesota

A storm system moving across Minnesota Friday leaves cooler weather in its wake, and that trend of more seasonable temperatures carries through next week.

Showers and storms that moved across Minnesota overnight and early Friday have mostly cleared out of the state as of 9 a.m. 

Now showers and storms become spottier, and lingering precipitation clears out west to east by afternoon. However, persistent activity in southeastern Minnesota could bring a renewed severe weather risk Friday afternoon before everything clears out.

Much of Minnesota started Friday in the 60s, and highs will be closer to average than the recent warm weather, with temperatures in the 70s and low 80s.

As the storm system moves through, winds are switching around to the northwest and will be breezy, especially in western Minnesota by afternoon. 

Behind Friday’s storm, the weekend sees fairly typical temperatures for late August. Both Saturday and Sunday start in the 50s with a few 40s north.  Highs both days will be predominantly in the 70s, with Saturday a couple degrees cooler than Sunday. So, a few 60s are possible in northern Minnesota Saturday, while southern Minnesota could get a couple 80s on Sunday.  

Sunshine and lower humidity prevail most of the weekend until the next storm starts moving across the state from Sunday afternoon through Monday afternoon. 

There is a possibility for strong storms with that system.  For the Twin Cities, the current timing for that storm is overnight Sunday into Monday morning, but we’ll keep you updated as it approaches.  

A reinforcing shot of cooler air moves in behind that storm, keeping southern Minnesota in the 70s and putting the northern half of the state in the 60s early next week. Here is that extended forecast for the Twin Cities:
