Winds rise under sunny skies

A cold front brings rain for Northern Minnesota

A storm moving through overnight drops temperatures and causes high winds Thursday. Even cooler weather moves in next week.

Wednesday and Thursday

Wednesday started seasonably with temperatures mostly in the 50s and a few 40s near the Canadian border.

Ahead of an approaching cold front, southern Minnesota warms into the 80s, and the state sees widespread sunshine during Wednesday.

It will also be breezy again, with gusts over 20 and 30 mph, especially in western Minnesota and the Arrowhead.

The cold front moves through the state overnight with the low pressure of the storm tracking across northern Minnesota.

Pivotal Weather

Even though the system lacks much moisture, it will bring northern Minnesota a few showers and storms starting late Wednesday evening and through Thursday morning, although the heaviest precipitation should stay north of the border.

Behind the cold front, cooler and windier conditions dominate Thursday’s forecast, but it will also still be mostly sunny.

Most of the state sees high temperatures about 10 degrees cooler versus Wednesday, and winds across the state will gust into the 30- and 40-mph range and possibly higher in a few spots.

Extended forecast

Winds lessen by Friday, and under mostly sunny skies, temperatures slowly warm again Friday and Saturday.

Another storm moves through late Saturday into Sunday, bringing widespread chances for showers and storms across the state.

It also starts funneling in noticeably cooler weather. Here is the Twin Cities forecast through Sunday, showing the temperature trend:

But, temperatures are likely to drop even further early next week, bringing Minnesota highs that will only be in the 50s and 60s.
