Cold weather brings freeze concerns

Unseasonably cold weather, including some morning temperatures below freezing in northern Minnesota, lingers through mid-week. Temperatures slowly warm as we head toward the weekend.
Tuesday and Wednesday’s cold
Tuesday began cold with temperatures in the 30s in northern Minnesota, causing some areas of frost. A couple spots, including Ely, even dipped below freezing.
The southern half of the state wasn’t as cold and started in the 40s, thanks in part to more cloud cover.
Temperatures do not improve much during the day, with highs only making it into the low to mid 50s for much of the state, which is 15 to 25 degrees below average for early September.

Wednesday temperatures look very similar, except morning lows will be even a couple degrees colder, causing more widespread freeze concerns north.
Because of this a freeze warning is up for all northern Minnesota Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Highs will be in the 50s again Wednesday.
The chilly weather is due to a cold front that went through over the weekend, and a pattern that now has Minnesota on the north (cold) side of active weather south of the state.
That same pattern is keeping the southern edge of the state under more cloud cover and occasional light rain through Wednesday, while northern Minnesota stays sunnier and dry much of the week.
Although the rain stays predominantly light, southeastern Minnesota could see totals add up to over an inch through Thursday morning.
Extended forecast
High Thursday slowly warm back into the 60s, and the rain in southern Minnesota finally clears out.
By the end of the week, northern Minnesota is back to average highs for mid-September, with southern Minnesota only a few degrees below average.
The break from rain is brief in southern Minnesota. Another system starts moving in Friday morning, bringing rain chances across the entire state by Friday afternoon and into Saturday.
However, the heavier precipitation targets southern Minnesota again, with one-half inch to an inch of rain possible, while the northern half of the state sees spottier, light precipitation.
