Saturday shower chances; back to the 70s on Sunday

A pleasant start to next week

I know, it’s chilly. At least it’s not as cold as yesterday.

Most of Minnesota and western Wisconsin will have Saturday highs in the 60s, with some 50s possible in northeastern Minnesota. Our Twin Cities high temp is expected to be in the mid 60s, which is well below our average Sept. 12 high of 73.

Highs in the 70s return to many areas, including the Twin Cities, on Sunday:

Roughly the northern third of Minnesota will have Sunday highs in the 60s.

Twin Cities metro area highs are projected to reach the mid 70s on Monday, then around 80 Tuesday and upper 70s on Wednesday. Temps retreat on Thursday, with highs in the upper 60s, then we top out around 70 on Friday.

Saturday rain chances

We’ve already seen some areas of showers this Saturday morning, and Minnesota and western Wisconsin will see scattered showers at times as we go through the afternoon and early evening hours. Parts of northwestern Minnesota may see some steadier rains for a while. An isolated thunderstorm is also possible this afternoon or early this evening. At least our Sunday is looking rain-free in most areas!

Cool stretch last September too

The Twin Cities had three days with highs in the 50s this past week. It wasn’t quite that chilly one year ago, but the Twin Cities did have several days with highs in the 60s during the second week of September last year. At MSP airport, our first high in the 80s last September didn’t happen until Sept. 15:

That was the first of seven consective days with highs in the 80s last September!

Fall colors?

We’re seeing some very spotty fall colors in the Twin Cities metro area, but our peak fall colors don’t typically arrive in the metro area until sometime in October.

How about northern Minnesota? Here’s the latest fall color report from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources:

The map shows a bit of fall color in parts of northwestern and north-central Minnesota. The fall color map is updated weekly, and you can expect some big changes in the the next two to four weeks as fall colors spread across Minnesota.
