The attention is centered on Salt Lake City Wednesday night for the only vice presidential debate between Vice President Mike Pence and Sen. Kamala Harris of California. MPR News will have that live at 9 p.m.

Former Vice President Walter Mondale was a senator from Minnesota when he took the stage against Republican Bob Dole in what was believed to be the first-ever vice presidential debate back in 1976. Mondale also was in two presidential debates as the Democratic nominee for president against President Ronald Reagan in 1984.

So what will he be watching for tonight?

Mondale spoke with MPR News host Tom Crann. Hear their conversation using the audio player above.
