Another snowstorm targets Minnesota with up to 8 inches of snow Thursday

Wednesday stays cloudy and cold

After record-setting snowfall Tuesday, another snowstorm is targeting Minnesota with heavy snow again on Thursday.

Although the snowstorm that hit Tuesday has moved off, part of the state is still digging out.  Most of the heavier snow fell in south-central Minnesota, including around the Twin Cities, which was one of the locations to set a daily snowfall record.

That total also becomes the second highest October daily snowfall ever recorded in the Twin Cities, beat only by the Halloween blizzard of 1991.

Wednesday’s forecast

Cloudy skies kept temperatures from falling much overnight, starting the state off in the 20s north and 30s south Wednesday morning. However, under mostly cloudy skies, temperatures warm little during the day, with highs only in the 30s.

This is 10 to 20 degrees below average.

Although much drier than Tuesday, there are a few isolated, light snow showers in the Arrowhead that linger through the morning.

Additionally, unsettled weather that stays mostly south of the state will occasionally bring a few flurries and sprinkles into southern Minnesota through the afternoon, but no significant accumulation is expected.

Thursday’s storm

Overnight Wednesday, another storm starts bringing snow to Minnesota, affecting the entire state by Thursday morning.

Because temperatures will be slightly milder in southern Minnesota (with highs near 40), precipitation for that portion of the state will quickly turn to rain that lasts most of the day.

Central and northern Minnesota stay in the low to mid 30s, cold enough that the storm brings another heavy snowfall event. Much of that area will see 4 to 6 inches of snow, with a heavier corridor of 6 to 8 inches or more expected in the center of the state.

Because of that, a winter storm warning has already been issued for a large portion of Minnesota in advance of the storm.

Extended forecast

Precipitation with that storm clears out overnight Thursday, bringing another drier day Friday.  Temperatures dip slightly colder behind Thursday’s storm, with the entire state back in the 30s Friday. That cold lingers through the weekend, with highs mostly in the 30s, but parts of northern Minnesota may only see 20s.

Another round of snow is forecast across the state from Saturday afternoon into Sunday.  Fortunately, it currently looks like heavy snow is less likely with that system.

Here is that cold and snowy forecast for the Twin Cities through Sunday:
