Saturday night mix to light snow; light snow lingers in the east Sunday a.m.

Another snow chance Tuesday

It was great to have the sunshine and light winds on Saturday! We’ve had too many cloudy and windy weekend days in the past three weeks.

How about the rest of the weekend? A mix of light rain and snow is expected to move into west-central and southwestern Minnesota during the Saturday evening hours. That mix spreads to the east and northeast overnight Saturday night, as it transitions to mostly snow. There could be a bit of light freezing rain in a few spots Saturday night. Any precip in the Twin Cities metro area is expected to hold off until after midnight Saturday night. Light snow could linger into Sunday morning in parts of eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin.

How much snow?

Snow amounts in the metro area are expected to range from a light coating to a bit less than one inch. Parts of central and northern Minnesota may see 1 to 2 inches of snow Saturday night into Sunday morning:

Of course “tonight” refers to the overnight hours of Saturday night.

The Duluth NWS office posted a closer look at forecast snow amounts in northeastern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin:

Temperature trends

Our average Twin Cities high temperature is 37 degrees on Nov. 22. Twin Cities metro area highs will probably hit the lower 40s on Sunday. Highs in the lower 40s are also expected in the southern third of Minnesota as well as west central Wisconsin, with mainly 30s elsewhere:

There may be some highs in the 20s in far northwestern Minnesota.

It’ll be a bit breezy on Sunday, with afternoon gusts in the 15-22 mph range in many areas:

Plotted values are in knots, with 15 knots equal to 17 mph and 18 knots equal to around 21 mph. Gusts close to 30 mph are possible in parts of southwestern Minnesota.

Back to temperatures, Twin Cities metro area highs are projected to be around 40 degrees on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, followed by lower 40s on Thanksgiving and upper 30s on Friday.

Temps rebound a bit next Saturday, then we may see several mild days at the end of Nov. and into early Dec. The NWS Climate Prediction Center shows a tendency for above normal temperatures in Minnesota and Wisconsin from Nov. 29 through Dec. 5:

We’ll see if that pans out.

Monday night and Tuesday snow?

We could see a mix of rain and snow late Monday night and Tuesday. That next weather system has the potential to give parts of Minnesota and western Wisconsin enough snow to shovel by Tuesday. Forecast models don’t agree on the track and temperature profile of that Monday night/Tuesday low pressure system, so check forecast updates as we get closer to Tuesday.
