Mild temps Sunday; snow likely Sunday night in northern Minn.

Sharply colder temps arrive Wednesday p.m. and Thursday

If you’re looking for snow, here’s the latest on our snowflake chances.

Far northern Minnesota could see scattered light snow showers or flurries Saturday night. An approaching low pressure system will bring a chance of light rain showers and snow showers to northwestern Minnesota Sunday afternoon. Snow coverage then expands to cover much of northern and central Minnesota plus western Wisconsin Sunday night. The snow will probably linger into Monday morning in northeastern Minnesota and parts of northwestern Wisconsin.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s North American Mesoscale (NAM) forecast model shows the potential precipitation pattern Sunday afternoon through Monday morning:

The Twin Cities metro area could see a coating of snow Sunday night.

You can hear updated weather information on the MPR network, and you’ll see updated weather info on the MPR News live weather blog.

Some forecast models show snow for northern and central Minnesota plus northwestern Wisconsin late Tuesday night into Wednesday. A few models include the Twin Cities metro area in the accumulating snow from that system, but some other forecast models show very little snow in the metro. We’ll have more details on that snow potential in the coming days.

Temperature trends

Sunday highs will be mainly in the 30s, with some 20s in far northern Minnesota and a few 40s in parts of southwestern Minnesota:

Sunday wind gusts are expected to be in the 12-20 mph range.

Twin Cities metro area highs are projected to reach the upper 30s on Monday, then around 40 degrees on Tuesday. We could see early morning temps in the lower 30s on Wednesday, with temps falling through the 20s as we go through the rest of the day. Metro area highs may only reach the middle teens on Thursday, followed by lower 20s on Christmas Day.

Snow season update

Our season snowfall total sits at 18.7 inches in the Twin Cities:

Despite tallying only six-tenths of an inch of snow at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport so far this month, our season snowfall is running 1.2 inches above normal. That’s due to a snowy autumn; MSP airport received 8.8 inches of snow in November and 9.3 inches in October.

By the way, the listed Saturday high of 34 degrees was just after midnight Friday night. The high at MSP airport during the daylight hours of Saturday was in the upper 20s.
