Sunday’s metro area highs in the 30s were more typical of late November than the first week of January. Our average Twin Cities high temp is 24 degrees this time of year.
We’ll top out in the 30s again on Monday, sharing 30s with most of Minnesota and western Wisconsin:
Monday wind gusts will be in the 12-17 mph range in southeastern Minnesota, but over 20 mph in northern and western Minnesota:
Plotted wind gusts are in knots, with 13 knots equal to 15 mph.

Fog overnight and Monday morning
Areas of fog are expected in parts of Minnesota and western Wisconsin Sunday night and Monday. The best chance of dense fog will be in southern Minnesota and portions of southern Wisconsin. A dense fog advisory covers southwestern Minnesota, plus far southern Minnesota counties and portions of Wisconsin Sunday evening into Monday morning:
Freezing fog is also possible overnight and Monday morning. The dense fog advisory area may need to be expanded in future NWS forecasts.

Wintry mix possible Monday morning
A wintry mix could move into parts of northwestern Minnesota late Sunday night. Much of Minnesota and western Wisconsin will have a chance of snow showers, sleet and patchy light freezing rain Monday morning.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s North American Mesoscale (NAM) forecast model shows the potential precipitation pattern from Sunday evening through Monday morning:
The chance of a wintry mix may linger into early Monday afternoon in far southeastern Minnesota.
Temperature trends
Twin Cities metro area highs are projected to reach the lower 30s Tuesday through Thursday, and we could touch 30 degrees on Friday. Above-normal temps may extend through next weekend and into the beginning of the following week; the NWS Climate Prediction Center shows a tendency for above-normal temperatures in Minnesota and Wisconsin from Jan. 9 through Jan. 13:
One forecast model shows arctic chill arriving around mid-January.
